On Saturday, May 7th, Yes, You Can Dance! held a Special Needs Symposium for it’s Volunteer Dance Mentors, which was a huge success! The symposium was one of two events taking place during May Volunteer Appreciation Month. The purpose of the symposium was for Yes, You Can Dance! to provide an afternoon of cognitive disability education to our Dance Mentors, in order for them to learn more about the many different students who participate in the Special Needs Ballroom Program. The symposium consisted of: a “What is Autism?” presentation by ASD Specialist, Rebecca Covert, a Q&A Panel with select parents of Special Needs Ballroom students, and a Sign-Language Basics class Western Pennsylvania School of the Deaf Interpreter, Cathy Morgan. Sad you missed the symposium? No worries, as Yes, You Can Dance! has plans to make the Special Needs Symposium an annual event!
